Grounds for Sculpture, created by J. Seward Johnson, is an (almost exclusively) outdoor museum featuring sculpture from around the world in every style, material, shape, and size imaginable. It is peopled throughout – quite literally – by the wonderful sculptures of Johnson himself. I have done a few posts on the Grounds for Sculpture because it is such an amazing place.
In previous posts, I focused on the sculptures throughout the grounds, but what I’ve never highlighted are the exquisite grounds themselves. Each and every sculpture is shown off to its best advantage by its “framing” by the perfect trees, shrubs, or grasses.
Truly, the Grounds for Sculpture is not just a sculpture exhibit,
but a true botanical garden.
One of Seward’s many sculptures, positioned in an outdoor amphitheater.
Sometimes just walking from one area of the grounds to another is an experience, this feeling to me like walking in an Impressionist painting.
Two views of one of the ponds on the grounds.
One of the many magnificent trees to be found as you walk
the museum’s 42 acres.
Another sculpture framed perfectly by the surrounding plantings.
Views in a Japanese sculpture garden.
One of a pair of ballerinas.
One of my favorite sculptures and arrangements in the park.
To enjoy more of Grounds for Sculpture, just type that in the search box above. Thanks for walking through these beautiful grounds with me.
That looks like a lovely place to visit and walk, Jeanne. I especially love that path through the rows of trees.

It’s a lot of ground to cover, but it’s just so lovely. I keep meaning to check and see if they have evening walks/events – it would be magical. (After the mosquitoes die off would be good.)

It’s pretty amazing, isn’t it? If you have time, and especially if you are a fan of Impressionism, check out one of my other posts, and see how Johnson brought their paintings to life – the man is just a genius – https://stilladreamer.wordpress.com/2013/05/31/grounds-for-sculpture-iii/

I do love Impressionism, and those sculptures certainly do it justice and are lovely. I had a look at the artist’s website, as well. All so interesting.

It looks like a tranquil and atmospheric space Jeanne, I particularly like the sculptures in the ponds – that first shell is fabulous.

It is – parents even keep a handle on their kids – no kids running around or climbing on sculptures.
Hmmm … I see I have done that first pond sculpture a disservice in my photo. It is actually a sea dragon, and it undulates in and out of the water 3 times behind that head. And I don’t have another good photo that shows that. See if this helps – https://www.groundsforsculpture.org/Artwork/Carmelita

Ah, now I see – but it was still beautiful whatever it was 🙂

Thanks for taking me along, Jeanne. What a glorious place to visit! The sculptures look like they’ve been there forever. They blend in with the plants. I like the last one, too. Looks like she’s contemplating. They’re all so very beautiful!

My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed them. Seward Johnson had a real vision. I’m thinking a trip back there in the fall when the leaves are changing would be another amazing experience!

My pleasure, of course! I’ve never been to anyplace like it in my life. If you hadn’t done so, look through some of the other posts I did, and see more of Johnson’s own fabulous work.Or visit Seward Johnson’s own web site. 🙂

My pleasure, of course! If it were closer, I think I should like to just take a book and find one of those amazing spaces and curl up and read.
