Reminded of Gratitude

It’s still early this morning, and I sit in my favorite journaling spot by the front windows as I always do.

I’m not feeling 100% – just one of those mornings one needs to take a little extra time to breathe, and let the day unfold gently.

The sun is rising slowly, brightly illuminating the left side of the porch posts outside; birds are singing their celebration of a new day, and I am listening to this music, so calming with the water running in the background –

Despite the fact that I am feeling pretty far from where I’d like to be at this precise moment, and am not even sure where exactly that is, I also realize that there are thousands, maybe millions, of people who would give anything to be sitting where I am right now …

… to be able to sit calmly and safely; and have the ability to push the day back just a bit before actually starting it; to sit with a cup of coffee and watch the sun slowly lighten the sky. We can forget how much better off we are in our own little lives than so many people in the world. Especially now.

I humbly and gratefully accept all the good I have right now, and trust that my life is unfolding exactly as it should be, no matter how that may feel at any given moment. Even a gentle morning is a gift, and a reminder of abundance. And so it is.

Something Wonderful

I recently learned of a small, very simple tip that actually does make a difference in how you can feel each day, and I thought I’d share.

Before you go to sleep at night, say to yourself or say out loud, “Something wonderful is going to happen tomorrow.”
When you get up in the morning, say, “Something wonderful is going to happen today.”  And repeat it from time to time during the day. But each night, each morning.

And it works. Here’s why.

We spend a lot of time in worrying and negative thinking. Wonderful things are going on in our lives all the time, but we often don’t stop and notice. They needn’t be huge. They can be as small as an unexpected call or text from a friend. Someone let you go ahead in traffic. Or you spotted this adorable little toad when you were out gardening.

My 4-year-old neighbor pointed out this little toad to me. He named him Jumper.

If, each day, you look at the day before to see what wonderful thing happened, you will spot it easily. And that works every day.

I think of it as gratitude through the back door.  Try it.

When you have a book …

There’s a kind of almost-glamour that comes with having a book published. People suddenly look at you differently, with a kind of respect, a bit of awe, maybe amazement (they didn’t know you could actually do that!) It’s kind of funny, really.

As if writing the book were the greatest thing ever. But to me, it seems that who I am – who you are – and all the amazing thoughts and dreams we have, is the real deal. The everyday kindnesses we offer, the work we put into healing ourselves and growing so that we may be better humans on this planet – the untold efforts of just staying steady in the midst of so much going on in the world.

Don’t get me wrong. I was thrilled to finally have my picture book “Butterflies” published. And I am thrilled to have produced it myself in the face of my publisher closing their doors. But what I’ve been thinking about lately is how much work it takes to get a book out into the world, and then … all it takes to get the word out that it even exists. It’s daunting, truly daunting. Especially self-publishing.

If you are already published, you know. If you are working towards being published/self-publishing, be forewarned, it’s not for the weak of heart.

I love this book. I want to know that little ones are hearing and smiling to the rhyme and finding all the magical notes in the illustrations. And I will continue promoting it to make that happen. And I have more stories to tell and bring to the world. I have lots to do and will get there. As will you, so take heart and be brave. We can always hold hands on this journey.

Maybe the “news” today was just exceptionally toxic.
