The Winter Blues

February 18, 2015 by still a dreamer

Where am I?

Snow-Feb4-BushesFence2

I’ll tell you how I feel – kind of lost. It seems like this Winter is just going to go on forever. And by the scarcity of posts by the fellow bloggers I know, I dare say that I am not alone. Of course, there may be other reasons, but a great deal has been written about the effect of weather such as we’ve been having on the human soul/psyche. Speaking for myself, the endless rounds of snow every few days and the concomitant shoveling plus the record lows in temperature such as I have never seen in my lifetime conspire to keep me, (and possibly you), indoors. Add to that, those of us who work from home and you have the perfect scenario for a serious case of the Winter blues and blahs.

Buddha2I suspect many of you, like myself, are looking for ways to brighten these 9˚ days. Getting out for even a breath of fresh air is always good, as is curling up with a good book, or watching some decent movie or TV. Each day when I journal, (a mood-lifter for me), I also look for some spiritual/metaphysical thoughts to pull me back into my more inspired self. Today I remembered this (favorite) quote from Buddha: “All that we are is the result of what we have thought.”

I am reminded that I am creating my day on every level and that my thoughts and feelings affect the energetic level of the planet itself. I searched a little further.

From The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley: “For this is the great secret, which was known to all educated men in our day: that by what men think, we create the world around us, daily new.”

Now, while I’m not yet bursting with boundless joy, at least I am smiling, happy and more content. I am remembering that Spring will come in time, and that there is still plenty of beauty in every moment of the day that is here, right now.

    Well timed post Jeanne.

I am dealing with recent snow (minimal by Boston standards) and brutal low night temperatures by completing tedious indoor projects like painting all my windowsills, touching up doors and trim, and reading in the sunniest part of the house.
Most of my day is spent keeping the wild bird feeders filled with wholesome seed and berries, and their water thawed.

Since all is temporary, soon spring.

Take care my friend. Pats to Jazzy.

We’re getting 6˚ below tonight … and with wind gusts up to 40 mph. My heart goes out to all the animals left out in the cold, as well as to the homeless who are not reached by shelter helpers.
I am so grateful these days for sunshine.
Jazzy is very well patted! (Thanks)

Ah, Jeanne, I definitely don’t like when there’s too much to shovel. I mean, a couple of inches every now and then can actually be a refreshing thing, but a lot? No. It’s bad for my body (certainly my carpal tunnel) and it’s such a wasted of time with so much to clear at my house. But I can’t say I get the Winter Blues. There’s a beauty to winter, too, and since I’m lucky to have shelter and heat, I guess I don’t feel as affected? I also embrace winter because there are fewer environmental exposures and that’s better for me. It’s already the middle of February so spring’s not so far off for you 🙂

I think it has a lot to do with being inside so much, and by necessity, too, (i.e., work), and then it’s dark. Who cleans after dark? (Well, certainly not me!) 🙂

Thanks for this topical and insightful post, Jeanne. The temp went up slightly for one day — and we rejoiced. I mean slightly.

Right there with ya! I find myself checking the 10-day forecast daily, always with the hopes that soon I’m going to see a spread of 30 and 40 degree days. It’s kind of sad when you see the temperature is going to break 30 and you think of it as a warm day!

Ahhh my winter weather is not as extreme as yours, not by a long shot. But I’ve not liked the COLD one little bit. Nope.

And what do the WOMEN say?
Yeah I’m poking The Crow Lady so to speak.

A little Valentin is in order perhaps?

PS This was posted on YouTube by Crowdude–really. It’s an omen, right?

OK – you’ve confused me a little on this one … Valentin was on Crowdude? If yes, then yes! An omen – which, of course, can be a good thing. 😀

Hey Eva – Say, that looks great. I’m going to see if I can get ahold of it. It would no doubt warm up a chilly winter’s night. 🙂 Thanks!
