Do you ever find yourself missing you? And by that I mean a part of you that you have always enjoyed but for which there seems to be little or no time nowadays?
On the rare occasions that I bake these days, I am reminded of times when I really used to cook and bake a whole lot more … and loved it. So when I do get in the kitchen, and take my sweet time baking a cake, (which may be to raise funds for the local equine rescue I help or when I’m a dinner guest and have offered to bring dessert), I not only enjoy it, but feel like I’ve re-found a part of myself. I call her the “domestic dolly” part of me.
Dolly likes to cook and bake – from scratch, of course – likes to sew, paint stuff – walls, furniture, do crafts – and yes, sometimes, actually enjoys cleaning … or at least the result. But as our lives get busier and stay busier, other things demand our time and attention, and these may fall to the wayside, and hey, I’m not 28 anymore. Yeah, then there’s that.
So we pick and choose, and try, somewhere along the line, to occasionally rediscover the parts of ourselves that sometimes get lost in the shuffle. It’s a challenge. Life has different demands than in the past. We have different goals. But it’s good to remember ourselves, even if for a little while.
What about you – are you a cook or baker with no time? Love to go out dancing? Travel? Play music? Hike? Just curl up with a good book?
My suggestion? Dust off that `you’ and take her or him out for a spin. Find that time or make that time. If it’s something we love, we can’t afford to go missing.
So, so true Jeanne.
What a pretty cake shown here! Alas, as I produce hundreds of Key Lime Pies per year, I often reflect on my cherished recipes made only during the holidays if a special client placed an order.
Especially my Black Cake with fresh Lemon Curd…recipe reputed to have come from Emily Dickenson’s receipt book. Really a very dark gingerbread and oh, so yummy!
And my steamed ginger/pumpkin pudding…I hand carried one to Bermuda one year at Christmas for my hosts. We doused it with black rum and set it ablaze…a very memorable Christmas indeed.
Ahhh, those were the days…D.

Thanks, Diane. If I don’t take photos of what i occasionally bake I may forget that sometimes I actually do!
Your desserts do sound really yummy. Maybe we need to treat ourselves a little more here and there, yes? 🙂

Unfortunately, writing is my answer. It’s the thing that gets moved to the back burner. The cake looks delightful.

Although it doesn’t count formally as “writing” I suppose, I do journal daily, but that’s more an exercise in maintaining my inner balance, cleaning out cobwebs and making the way for everything else. It can be too easy to put what we love (fear?) most on that back burner, but we are so much happier actually do it, too.
Thanks on the cake. 🙂

Well, my friend, you’ll be surprised to hear that I baked my third peach cake this summer. In fairness, my daughter did most of the other two, but I helped….

Good for you. Of course, you can bake! I’ll tell you something else – baking as infrequently as I do right now, I feel rather slow and almost awkward in a way as I do all the prep, etc. Used to be, I’d glide through baking with ease and fluidity. Like anything, if you – or I – were doing this all the time? It would become a breeze.

Sure! I’m far enough away you can’t come over and yell at me if I’m wrong. LOL

I hear you. What’s surprising is when someone who has felt the pain, turns around and does it to others.

Funny you should write about this as it is something I’ve actively been doing for several months.
Hi.
Looks delicious!

Good for you! It’s so important that we do this. Dare I ask what you’ve been doing?
And thank you on the cake. I’m pondering baking something with summer fruit over the weekend. 🙂

When I was younger and raising children, I definitely had times of missing “me.” I have more time now to be totally M E. I bake (and now I’m teaching my little grandkids to bake with me), I write (two books published, more to come) and I blog (and have met so many wonderful people that way who open my world). But the world got most opened by….finding ME.

We all need to dig out our best “me” – we’re so much happier that way! Thanks for stopping by.
